My Story

Every person out there has their “why”. My why is my little, adopted brother. He has his own story. This is mine.

I grew up in Madison, Wisconsin. I attended the Madison School District from kindergarten through high school, graduating from Madison La Follette in 1995. When I was in the seventh grade, it was discovered I had a learning disability in reading comprehension and written expression. I had struggled to read and learn as long as I can remember, including not learning to read until second grade. Little did I know then that this struggle would make me into the person I am now.

Fast forward to college. I attended Madison Technical College (now called Madison College) and earned my degree in Child Care and Development. I then earned my bachelor’s degree from Edgewood College. My major was Early Childhood: Special Education and Elementary Education: Pre-K through Third Grade. However, when I graduated, teaching jobs were hard to find. I did not work in the education field for many years. I did earn my master’s degree from Augustana University in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in Education.

I jumped around the Madison School District as a teacher until I found my place. I started working for Al Arnold of Arnold Reading Clinic (see link under resources). I love working there. I help children who struggle to read to read!

As I flourished under Al, I joined the International Dyslexia Association-Wisconsin Branch. I have worked my way up to president. A position I try to bring awareness to Dyslexia to teachers, parents, administrators and just about everyone.

Now, I want to help others. I am a certified IEP/504 coach. I want to take on school districts and make sure children with disabilities get their education.

 Let’s do this together!
